delta blocking BCVAULT uses Delta Block Technology. This means that if a file on your system changes in comparison to its original on the Vault, BCVault only uploads the disk level blocks that change and the file header. This makes backup highly efficient. In the diagram below if A represents the whole file (at block level), traditional backup would reload the whole lot. BCVault employs several technologies (some patented) to optimize efficiency. The three below are major contributors to reducing both backup traffic AND the size of your BCVault. This means less data link usage and smaller Vault size. As you pay for the size of your Vault (and not the original size of your data) these technologies make BCVault a more cost-effective solution.

COMPRESSION

Typical files contain a substantial amount of 'white space' - blank areas and formatting in documents, 'null field' and empty variable space in databases. It is impossible to say how much compression BCVault will obtain on your files; it uses several compression algorythms to maximise this. Many picture formats already have in-built compression (e.g JPEG). However BCVault can typically obtain 50% compression on documents and in excess of this on databases. This reduces the amout of file transmission time and your costs, as your Vault will consist of compressed data.

DELTA BLOCKING

Deta Blocking has been developed to make use 'over the wire' highly efficient - it significantly reduces the amount of data traffic required to backup changes. See right.

SINGLE FILE INSTANCING

In a typical working scenario documents circulate. If an MD sends a 10MB company brochure to 200 employees, a typical backup system will upload every single emailed copy. That's 2GB of data. BCVault rcognises that it has 200 copies of the same document, creates a restore reference point for each copy and then just keeps a 'Single Instance' of it. This would effect a disk storage saving (PRE COMPRESSION) of circa 1.98GB.
